How Conventional Medicine Is Failing Women’s Health (And What We Can Do About It)

You tell your doctor that you can’t sleep, your heart suddenly beats faster for no reason, you get angry with your partner over little things, and you need a glass of wine (or three) most nights just to relax. Your doctor nods sympathetically, conducts some blood tests, and when the results come back “normal,” he or she advises an SSRI or maybe therapy.

Does this sound familiar?

I went to medical school and love science. I really do. But after years of practice and my own experience with burnout and chronic stress, I’ve learned something very important: conventional medicine doesn’t cover a whole area of women’s health. And it’s costing us our peace, our energy, our work life balance, and let’s be honest, our joy.

The “Everything Looks Normal” Problem

Conventional medicine excels at crisis management. Broken bone? We’ve got you. Heart attack? On it. Life-threatening infection? Consider it handled.

But what about the daily stress that high-achieving women deal with? The kind that makes your jaw ache from clenching, and keeps you up at night thinking about tomorrow’s presentation? That’s where the system falls short.

The current model waits for things to break before intervening. Your thyroid numbers are “within range,” even if they are at the absolute edge. Your blood pressure is “fine,” although it has gone up quite a bit during the past few years. Your labs are “normal,” even though you feel anything but.

We are taught to look at numbers and data points. But nobody is asking: “How does your body feel when you wake up and move through your morning routine?” Or: “What happens in your chest when you get an email from work after hours?” Or: “Where in your body do you store stress?”

The Mind-Body Split That Is Actually Killing Us

This is where conventional medicine really fails: we’ve treated the mind and body as if they were two separate things. They’re not.

They’re in constant conversation, and for most successful women, that conversation sounds more like an argument.

Your body is always sending signals. That tightness in your neck. That nauseous feeling before a big meeting. That struggle to take a deep breath. These are your body’s ways of telling you that your nervous system is working too hard. These signals show up throughout your daily routine, and your body is begging you to listen.

But there isn’t a billing code in conventional medicine for “your nervous system needs a reset.” We don’t have a prescription for “getting back in touch with your body’s wisdom.” And we definitely don’t plan follow-ups for “learning to feel safe in your own skin.”

The Problem for the High-Achieving Woman

If you’re reading this, you’re probably the woman who seems to have it all together. Corner office or climbing the ladder. Well-dressed, well-spoken, well-respected. You follow the glow up tips, book the blowouts and manicures, because that counts as self care, right?

But what’s really happening is that you’re performing wellness. You’re achieving on the outside while falling apart on the inside. You’ve perfected the art of looking calm while feeling chaos. Nobody prescribes slow living. Nobody suggests you try doing less.

And conventional medicine tells you this is just… stress. Like it’s some minor inconvenience, rather than a full-body experience that’s literally changing your biology. Like being told to “manage your stress better” is actual treatment.

Spoiler alert: it’s not.

What Is Missing? The Somatic Part

I’m going to get a bit woo on you now, but stick with me because there is good science behind this.

“Somatic” means “of the body.” And somatic healing understands that stress, trauma, and emotions are not merely psychological phenomena; they live throughout your tissues, fascia, and nervous system. As the saying goes, “Your body keeps the score.”

Conventional medicine uses medications to treat the symptoms, which can be helpful. But we’re missing the foundational piece of helping women get rid of stress, reset their nervous systems, and tap into their inherent ability to heal themselves.

Think about it: where do you feel anxious? Your chest? Your belly? Your throat? That’s not a metaphor; that’s your body trying to tell you something. But if no one has ever taught you how to listen to these cues, you’ll either ignore them (hello, burnout) or try to numb them (hello, wine o’clock). Your body knows what to do to heal itself. We just have to learn its language.

The Paradox of Prevention

What truly gets me going is that somatic work is the most affordable kind of health treatment. I’m talking about the best kind of prevention: teaching women how to regulate their nervous systems before they develop chronic conditions, anxiety disorders, or stress-related illnesses.

But our existing system doesn’t put prevention first. It’s not patentable. It doesn’t have results that can be seen right away. You can’t get it from a pharmacy.

We don’t do anything until stress shows up as high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, or mental health problems. Then we prescribe expensive medications and interventions.

It’s backwards.

Somatic tools must be part of every woman’s fundamental health care. This shouldn’t be “woo-woo” or alternative; it should be foundational. But until conventional medicine catches up, women like us need to speak up for ourselves.

So What Can We Actually Do About It?

First of all, I want to make it clear that I’m not telling you to throw away your medicine or fire your doctor. We need both traditional medicine AND something more.

Start with your morning routine and your night routine. These bookends of your day are where nervous system regulation can begin. Pay attention to where you hold stress. That tightness in your chest, that knot in your gut, and that stiffness in your shoulders aren’t just there for no reason. They are information. Your body is trying to tell you something.

Learn how to regulate your nervous system. Your body has a brake (the parasympathetic nervous system) and an accelerator (the sympathetic nervous system). Most high-achieving women are great at flooring the accelerator but terrible at finding the brake. Breathwork, gentle movement, and grounding methods are all somatic tools that can help you find that balance.

Stop ignoring your body’s signals. If you’re stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, it’s real. It’s valid. And it deserves attention and support, even if your bloodwork comes back “normal.”

Look for professionals who can work in both worlds. Find providers who appreciate science and also understand how the body works. Who can look at your labs and ask about your nervous system. Who understand the importance of prevention.

Allow yourself to do the work. This is your healing era. Yes, it feels good to get your hair done. But it’s not the same as doing the deeper work of fixing your relationship with stress and getting your nervous system back in balance. You deserve both the manicure and the mending that matters.

The Future of Women’s Health Care

I see a future where every visit to the doctor involves a check-in regarding your nervous system. Where people learn about nutrition and fitness alongside somatic awareness. Where “How does your body feel?” is as common as “What’s your blood pressure?”

Until conventional medicine catches up, those of us living between these two worlds need to lead the way. We need to normalize conversations about nervous system regulation. We need to make somatic healing accessible, understandable, and free from gatekeeping.

Your body is not letting you down. The system is failing you.

But the good news is that you have more power than you think. Your body has wisdom you haven’t tapped into yet. Learning to work with your body instead of against it is where you meet your higher self, and where real change begins.

It’s time to quit pretending to be healthy and start actually being healthy. Your nervous system is waiting.

Ready to stop managing symptoms and start actually healing?

Are you ready to learn how to really regulate your nervous system instead of merely dealing with the symptoms? Let’s talk about how to integrate somatic healing into your life. You should feel as calm and grounded on the inside as your dream life looks on the outside. Find your coaching program here.
